How Often Should You Deep Clean Your House? | SuperMaids

March 06, 20235 min read

Deep cleaning your home is just something we all have to do. But as time goes on and life gets busier, it can be hard to remember what needs to be done. You can start by taking count of your home's specific needs. How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you have? Do you have pets? Do you have children? All of these things will effect how and when you should approach deep cleaning your home.

For a place to start, we've put together 3 sample deep clean checklists. Hopefully these will help you begin creating your own personal deep cleaning schedule!

Mop, Cleaning, Checklist

Here are some Deep Cleaning Checklists to follow every three, six, and twelve months!

Every three months:

This is the best time to:

  • Deep clean your carpets, rugs, and upholstery items. They're likely full of dust, dirt, and allergens. This is a good time to rotate your larger rugs as well! If a large rug is kept in the same spot for too long, it can become unevenly sun-faded and develop furniture dents.

  • Dust and clean all surfaces. This includes windows, walls, and ceilings. This is a great time to clean out those neglected areas. Any area that's hard to reach, such as the ceiling fans or the tops of bookshelves, could use a wipe down.

  • Clean and disinfect your bathrooms. You may be doing this once or twice a week already. However, when you're in the mindset to deep clean, you'll be more likely to get into the hard-to-reach areas that might go untouched during your routine cleanings.

  • Clean and organize your kitchen and cabinets. It's a good idea to take an inventory of what you have each time you deep clean. Take this time to organize your cabinets to make sure you're using what's about to expire.

  • Wipe out your refrigerator. You may clean out your fridge regularly, but take this time to be thorough. Take out the food and place it on a table or counter. Then, take out all the shelves and organizers from the fridge. Wash them with dish detergent and wipe out the interior and exterior of the fridge.

  • Clean your oven. Take this time to do a routine cleaning of your oven. It's a good idea to do this as often as possible. The oven collects grime faster than you think, and it often goes unnoticed until it's already built up.

Every six months:

  • Clean and organize your pantry or food storage. If you followed the last checklist, you likely won't need to do much for this step. However, if you have extra food storage like a basement or cellar, you'll want to take this time to check it for expired goods. You can also take this opportunity to put all your pantry items that are close to expiring toward the front of your cabinets or shelves. Make sure they're clearly visible so you can see what needs to be used first.

  • Clean your mattresses. If you have seasonal or dust allergies, this is crucial! The dust and pollen that builds up in your mattress and pillows can cause allergies in the morning and when you're trying to sleep. If you're unsure where to start with cleaning your mattress, this article gives you step by step instruction.

Once a year:

This is a good time to clean your:

  • Garage: Things tend to pile up in the garage, especially if you're living with kids. Old bike, outside toys, outgrown beach gear can fill up precious space in our garage. Take an inventory of what you have and what can be donated. Reorganize what you have left and wipe down any plastic totes or equipment.

  • Closets: If you need a guide on cleaning out your closet, we've got you covered. Check out our closet organization blog post here! The best place to start is to look at what clothes you haven't worn in the last 6 months. What is taking up room in your closet that doesn't bring you joy? After you've decided if anything needs to go, vacuum and wipe down your shelves to make it feel fresh.

  • Basements: Everyone's basement is different. How you deep clean yours will depend on if it's finished, lived in, or just used for storage. If it's primarily used like a garage, treat it the same way when deep cleaning. Wipe down any plastic storage bins and dust out the cobwebs. See what you can donate and what you need to keep.

  • Attics: The attic can easily accumulate things that don't have a home. This can be a good time to see what you have, what you've forgotten about, and what you can get rid of. Similarly to any area of storage, make sure to give everything a wipe-down with a duster.

These are just examples of what you can include in your own cleaning schedule. Each home is different, and each family has different needs. You might need to do one or all of these things more frequently! It can be hard to think of where to start, so hopefully we've given you some ideas for your next deep clean.
